Sustainability
MCM is passionate and committed to help improve the human condition by embedding sustainable design practices into the creation of the built environment with the purpose of enriching the lives, health and well being of its inhabitants.
An early example of MCMs sustainable design approach is the Terasen Gas Operations Centre in Surrey, BC. Although completed in 2000 before LEEDŽ was in place, its design embodied ground breaking sustainable principles before they became fashionable. It also brought together all members of the design team in group sessions to resolve cross discipline issues to the benefit of the project (now called the integrated design process).
This early experience in sustainability was the springboard to integrating the approach in all of our projects whether they are LEEDŽ registered or not. Since that time, MCM has set goals towards carbon neutral, net zero energy developments. In that regard and in simple terms, we design buildings with passive responses to minimize energy requirements. We then apply systems that use energy efficiently. Finally, we propose to offset that energy consumption with on-site energy generation, if feasible.
While LEEDŽ does not define our approach to sustainability, it is the current standard for measurement and our experience is extensive with almost 2M sq.ft. certified.
LEEDŽ Certified projects include:
- Vancouver Convention Centre Expansion (1 M sq.ft.)
LEEDŽ Platinum - Semiahmoo Library and RCMP District Office
LEEDŽ Silver - Electronic Arts Ph 2
LEEDŽ Certified - Electronic Arts Ph 3
LEEDŽ Silver - BC Housing (Interiors)
LEEDŽ CI Gold - Westminster Centre (South Tower Expansion)
LEEDŽ Gold - Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre (650,000 sq.ft.)
