Brentwood Mall
Burnaby, BC
Brentwood Mall, located in Burnaby, BC at the prime intersection of Lougheed Highway and Willingdon Avenue, was originally built in 1961. In order to recapture its market share, which had eroded over time by new centres, Trilea Centres Inc. embarked on a major renovation and expansion. A single storey food floor was replaced by a two-storey 90,000 square foot anchor. The mall between the two majors was expanded from 200,000 square feet on one storey to 320,000 square feet and 110 stores on two levels, establishing it as a significant regional shopping centre.
Musson Cattell Mackey Partnership was charged with developing a dynamic shopping experience unlike any other competing centre. The two-storey mall was designed with an innovative fabric roof, supported by a lightweight steel structure. The bright and airy feeling of the new double storey mall has been extended into the existing single storey malls by the use of common design theme elements.
