Newly opened on April 3, 2009, the Vancouver Convention Centre West Project (VCCW) is a landmark for Vancouver, British Columbia and Canada through its unique blending of site, building design and sustainability.
The $565 million facilities were the International Broadcast Centre for the 2010 Olympic and Para Olympic Winter Games. The convention centre was built on a 3.25 hectare site (plus extension into Burrard Inlet) just to the west of Canada Place. Existing leased facilities within Canada Place were renovated and the two sites were linked, forming a new integrated convention and exhibition centre.
The expansion adds 359,000 square feet, consisting of exhibit space, meeting space, ballroom space and a signature room, to the 133,000 square feet of function space available in the current convention centre, more than tripling the total function space available.
The site offers an astonishing array views to the north, a continuation of Harbour Green Park to the west, downtown Vancouver to the south, and a connection to Canada Place on the east. The building design provides a functional program while integrating the city’s “public realm” in a way that celebrates both.
The Project achieved LEED® Platinum certification on February 5, 2010. A key to attaining this is the incorporation of a Canada's largest living green roof above, the marine habitat below and the human environment that falls between.
VCCEP is collaboration between Musson Cattell Mackey Partnership and DA Architects + Partners and LMN Architects of Seattle.
