Canada Place, situated on the downtown waterfront of Vancouver, British Columbia, opened in 1986 as the Canada Pavilion at Expo 86. It was later converted into the Vancouver Trade & Convention Centre. The theme of Canada Place is nautical. The building adorns the downtown waterfront with a superstructure resembling a large ocean vessel, a powerful prow thrusting into the harbour and a roof line of five white sails.

Canada Place includes the following facilities:

  • the 15-storey Pan Pacific Hotel with 505 rooms plus restaurant, banquet and retail facilities.
  • the main trade and convention exhibit hall encompassing an area of 100,000 square feet of column-free space. The hall is protected by five graceful sails of fibreglass fabric coated with Teflon. The tensioned fabric roof, suspended by cables from ten steel masts, was designed to withstand the severe marine environment.
  • the cruise ship facility is currently being expanded to accommodate a third berth.
  • the CN Imax Theatre at the prow of Canada Place accommodates 480 people in individual theatre-type seats.
  • This project was a joint venture between Musson Cattell Mackey Partnership, Downs Archambault and Zeidler Roberts Partnership.
