Centra Gas Building
Victoria, BC
Musson Cattell Mackey Partnership worked closely with the client and tenant, with Victoria City Council, the Planning Department, and the public in order to realize a common desire for a building that "fits in" on Douglas Street, one of Victoria's main streets. The project team sought a design simple in form but rich in texture and detail, to be compatible with the nearby City Hall, The Bay store and other heritage landmarks.
The building is set back to allow the street view of The Bay. The corner of the building has been expressed as a quarter round vertical element, accented with flag poles and a projecting roof. In order to better integrate with the Fairfield Hotel and the street fabric, a brick-clad, two-storey portion of the building steps the mass down to the street.
